- What is your Fitzpatrick Skin Type?
The Fitzpatrick Skin Types: A Layman's Guide Understanding your skin type is crucial when it comes to skincare and aesthetic treatments. The Fitzpatrick skin type system categorises skin types based on their response to ultraviolet (UV) light. It was developed by Dr Thomas Fitzpatrick in 1975. The Fitzpatrick Skin Type scale is a widely used classification system that helps determine how your skin responds to sun exposure and various treatments. Let's delve into the Fitzpatrick Skin Types, the criteria used to classify them, and the health implications and considerations in aesthetic treatments. Fitzpatrick Skin Types The Fitzpatrick Skin Type scale categorizes skin into six different types based on how the skin responds to UV exposure. Here are the six Fitzpatrick Skin Types: Type I: Pale white skin, always burns, never tans Type II: Fair skin, burns easily, tans minimally Type III: Medium skin, burns moderately, tans gradually Type IV: Olive skin, burns minimally, tans well Type V: Brown skin, rarely burns, tans easily Type VI: Dark brown or black skin, never burns, tans easily Criteria for Classifying Skin Types The classification of Fitzpatrick Skin Types is based on several factors, including: Genetic disposition Reaction to sun exposure Hair and eye color History of sunburns Health Implications and Considerations in Aesthetic Treatments Understanding your Fitzpatrick Skin Type is essential for various health implications and considerations in aesthetic treatments. Here are some key points to keep in mind: Higher Fitzpatrick Skin Types (IV-VI) are more prone to hyperpigmentation and keloid scarring. Treatments that cause excessive heat to the skin, or mechanical abrasion, or some medium depth and most deep chemical peels should be avoid or used with severe caution. Certain lasers (CO2, Fraxel, IPL and BBL) should be avoided in this cohort. Lower Fitzpatrick Skin Types (I-III) are at higher risk of sunburn and skin cancer. They require very strict compliance to sun protection. Individuals with Fitzpatrick Skin Types I and II should be extra cautious with laser treatments and chemical peels. Type III to VI also need to be cautious with specific laser treatments and deep chemical peels are best avoided. Proper sun protection is crucial for all skin types to prevent premature aging and skin damage. Consulting with a skincare professional can help you determine your Fitzpatrick Skin Type and develop a personalized skincare and treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
- CHEMICAL PEEL - IS IT SUITABLE FOR ME AND DOES IT HURT? Dr Amina Adeniran
Close-up view of facial skin undergoing a chemical peel, showing peeling and rejuvenation effects. WHAT IS A CHEMICAL PEEL A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure that involves the application of a chemical solution to the skin, resulting in the exfoliation (lifting off) of the outer layers. This can be applied to skin on the face, limbs and trunk, depending on the cause of concern and treatment goals. This process helps to improve the appearance of the skin by removing dead skin cells, promoting new cell growth, and enhancing overall skin texture and tone. Chemical peels can vary in strength and depth, making them suitable for various skin types and conditions. At the Fitzpatrick Super-Skin Clinic, the chemical peels specially selected for our clients can be used in all skin types, including skin of colour. Catering to all skin shades is what we pride ourselves on at the clinic. WHO SHOULD CARRY OUT A CHEMICAL PEEL Chemical peels are often performed by qualified medical professionals or licensed skincare professionals in a clinical setting. It is highly important you do your research into the service provider, and ensure they are licenced to carry out this procedure. A doctor, dentist or registered nurse is your safest bet, always. WHAT TYPES OF CHEMICAL PEELS ARE THERE Chemical peels can vary in strength and depth, making them suitable for various skin types and conditions. The depths of chemical peels can be categorized into three main types: superficial, medium, and deep peels. Superficial chemical peels target the outermost layer of skin (epidermis) and are typically mild, using alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as lactic acid or glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) such as salicyclic acid. In superficial chemical peels you do not tend to notice a peeling but a 'dusting' of the skin at most, leaving a healthy glow. Medium depth chemical peels penetrate deeper into the skin, reaching the middle layer (dermis) and often utilize trichloroacetic acid (TCA) alongside other acids and antioxidants. Antioxidants such as glutathione, vitamin C, retinoic acid, and kojic acid are included in the mixes in various degrees. At the Fitzpatrick Super-Skin Clinic we use medical grade premium brands of Alumier and The Perfect Peel®️, which are essentially superficial and medium depth chemical peels respectively, as these are proven to be sufficient to treat mostl skin concerns, and suitable for all skin types. Deep chemical peels go even further, affecting the lower layers of the dermis and usually involve phenol. This is carried out by Dermatologists as a medical treatment. It requires months of preparation and would need an extended period of time for recovery. The choice of peel depth depends on the specific skin concerns being addressed and the desired results. A thorough skin consultation is highly advised by a trained health care professional, beforehand. WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY: WILL MY SKIN PEEL AND IS IT PAINFUL? At our clinic, the application of the chemical itself takes less than15 minutes and is pain-free. At most, a tingling or warm sensation for a few minutes is experienced. This settles minutes later, no more than 5minutes. Your appointment will include a thorough consultation and after care advice. The total time of 45minutes is allocated for your appointment. Usually no peeling is noted with superficial peels. Medium depth peels cause the skin to shed and visibly peel from Day 3 to Day 7 on average. Peeling of the skin is more noticeable with medium depth and deep chemical peels. The deeper the peel the more likely to experience a degree of discomfort such as tingling and itch, from Day 1-7 after application. Swelling is noted more with deep chemical peels. A review is advised 2-4 weeks later and on avearage for most skin concerns, a course of 1 to 4 peel sessions, each spaced 2-4 weeks apart, is advised. WHAT SKIN CONDITIONS CAN I TREAT WITH CHEMICAL PEELS Chemical peels are effective in treating a variety of skin conditions, including acne (including active cystic acne), hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and uneven skin texture. They can also help reduce the appearance of scars and sun damage, making them a versatile option in skincare. Patients with conditions such as melasma or age spots may also benefit significantly from chemical peels, as the treatment promotes a more uniform skin tone and texture. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE TREATMENT Aftercare following a chemical peel is crucial for optimal results and skin recovery. Patients are typically advised to avoid sun exposure, wear sunscreen diligently, and use gentle skincare products for several days post-treatment. It is also important to keep the skin hydrated and to avoid picking or peeling the skin as it heals. The end result of a chemical peel can be a brighter, smoother, and more youthful-looking complexion, with improved skin clarity and texture, leading to increased confidence in one’s appearance. - "LIP SERVICE: WHY ARE WOMEN GETTING THEIR LABIA ... PUFFED?" (Allure magazine article, November 2024) Intimate Rejuvenation at our Clinic: Enhance Confidence with Tailored Treatments
In the realm of aesthetics, where confidence meets personal transformation, there is a growing emphasis on intimate rejuvenation. This highly specialised area of treatment goes beyond traditional skincare to address concerns that may affect one's self-esteem and overall well-being in a discreet and tailored manner. Located in the heart of Bromley, London, the Fitzpatrick Super-Skin Clinic®️ stands out as a premier destination for those seeking a comprehensive approach to aesthetics. Led by Dr Amina Adeniran, the clinic offers a range of services designed to enhance beauty and promote skin health. From injectables to microneedling, chemical peels to skin boosters, the clinic's offerings cater to a diverse clientele with a focus on all Fitzpatrick skin types. Amidst this array of services, the clinic also provides intimate (vulval) rejuvenation treatments using polynucleotides to the labia minora, and filler treatment to the labia majora, both aimed primarily at improving the function of the vagina as a whole as well as a selection of topical therapies. Dr Amina is highly skilled at both the consultation and treatment of these embarrassing symptoms. She explains, "The vagina is the only organ in the body that once it's form and structure changes, it's function and physiology changes simultaneously. The structural changes we commonly encounter are the deflation 'atrophy' of the labia majora (outer folds) and a lengthening and hypertrophy of the labia minora (inner folds) which causes the unwanted unnatural appearance we are embarrassed to accept. Causes of change in structure include the trauma of vaginal child birth, hormonal changes such as the perimenopause and other metabolic diseases. In addition with the advent of weight loss treatments like Ozempic and Mounjaro, the potential consequence of rapid weight loss and undesired outcome of excessive skin laxity is a real challenge for some. This problem is also noted in the intimate area, with loss of collagen in the labial tissues. This change in structure directly leads to a change in the vagina's ability to maintain it's warmth, moisture and acidity (pH). As you can expect, this may lead to recurrent bacterial vaginosis, thrush, malodour, discomfort with intercourse, tearing of the skin tissue with intercourse, urinary incontinence and recurrent urinary tract infections. Now imagine the negative impact of this on different forms of sexual relationships? This can be catastrophic. We can effectively manage this with filler treatment (the same substance used for facial filler treatment) to the labia majora (outer folds) to restore structure and then function" Recognizing that intimate wellness plays a significant role in one's confidence and overall sense of self, these specialized treatments aim to rejuvenate and enhance this delicate area with precision and care. In a competitive landscape where self-care and aesthetics intersect, the Fitzpatrick Super-Skin Clinic®️ sets itself apart by prioritizing client privacy in a discreet, home-based setting. This exclusive approach not only ensures a sense of comfort and confidentiality but also underscores the clinic's dedication to creating a personalized experience for each visitor. As individuals embark on their journey to improved skin health and enhanced confidence, the concept of 'super-skin' emerges as a guiding principle at the clinic. Encouraging clients to strive for excellence in their skincare routines and treatments, the clinic's holistic approach emphasizes not just outward beauty but also inner self-assurance and empowerment. For those seeking a refined and sophisticated approach to aesthetics, the Fitzpatrick Super-Skin Clinic offers a sanctuary of excellence where personalized care meets advanced treatments.
